Renting does not mean living with someone else's light switches forever. Almost everything worth automating can be done with things that unplug, peel off, or unscrew, and all of it moves with you.

Rule one: nothing permanent

If installing it requires a drill, a new wire, or replacing something that belongs to the landlord, there is usually a plug-in or adhesive version that does the same job. Keep the original fittings in a labelled box so you can put everything back on moving day.

Bulbs before switches

Swapping a bulb is the easiest upgrade in the whole category. You get dimming, scheduling, and colour without touching the wiring. Just keep the original bulbs.

Smart plugs for everything with a switch

Lamps, fans, coffee makers, the Christmas tree. A plug turns any dumb appliance into a scheduled one and leaves no trace when you pull it out.

Adhesive light strips under shelves and battery-powered puck lights in dark cupboards add real usefulness to a rental kitchen. Choose removable adhesive strips rather than permanent tape so the paint survives.

Security without screws

Freestanding indoor cameras on a shelf, battery doorbell cameras on a no-drill bracket, and door and window sensors with adhesive backing cover most of what a renter needs. Check your lease before adding anything to a shared entrance.

Skip these for now

Hardwired switches, built-in thermostats, and door locks that replace the deadbolt are all worth it in a home you own and rarely worth the argument in one you rent.

Make it portable by design

Group your devices by room in the app and give them generic names like Bedroom Lamp rather than names tied to this specific flat. When you move, you rename a room instead of rebuilding everything.
