An Easy At-Home Brushing Routine for Dogs and Cats
Share
Regular brushing spreads natural oils, removes loose hair and gives you a chance to check your pet from nose to tail.
Pick the right brush for the coat
- Short coats: soft bristle brush or rubber grooming glove.
- Long or thick coats: slicker brush and a wide-tooth comb.
- Double coats: undercoat rake used gently.
Make it a calm habit
Start with short sessions of a few minutes. Brush in the direction the hair grows, use light pressure, and offer a treat afterward. Always work gently around the belly, legs and tail.
Check as you go
Look for tangles, mats, dry patches or anything unusual. Contact your veterinarian if you notice lumps, redness or irritation.

A weekly routine works for most pets, and more often during heavy shedding. Short and positive beats long and stressful.
